Whats this one about
8:10 PM
Various genres around the world?
Avatar
I'll post the PDF file that contains all the information for this collab
8:11 PM
And for those that don't have a PDF viewer I'll post the details here: Overview: Around The World Music collab, Musicians and Singers can team up and pick a country which they'll then make a traditional track inspired by that country. These tracks can be instrumental or include vocals. And ideally it’ll be one country per team or participant (if you prefer to rock solo). As an example, the countries and genres you may choose could be; Bossa Nova from Brazil, Mariachi from Mexico, Blues from the USA, Milonga from Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, Flamenco from Spain, or Bushi from Japan, to name a few. Rules:
  • All files should be WAV 16bit audio
  • Include your Newgrounds username, song name, chosen country, and anyone who you worked with in the title of your file. It should look something like this; Username – Song name (chosen country) feat. Collaborator
  • Ideally one country and one genre per participant as we want to include as much different genres and countries as possible.
  • Song should between 1 minute to 2 minutes in length
  • Have fun!
Avatar
That sounds cool! I'm really intimidated about trying to emulate a traditional genre but I might give it a try 😅

Time to break out my grandpas accordian and make italian canal music

One suggestion is to utilise exotic scales like the Egyptian Scale, Moorish Phrygian scale, or Javanese scale for example. You don't have to use traditional instruments per say if you don't want to. You can base your track on the notes of an exotic scale.
Avatar
makes sense!
8:22 PM
What idea are you thinking of for this, out of curiosity?
Avatar
I've been thinking about making a Bossa Nova track

ooh. bossa nova is fun to relax to

oooo i like this idea ! i could do some pretty cool takes off of "kundiman" a type of music from the philippines (where my genetics and most of my family members are from) "kundiman" in a nutshell are key switching songs kind of like love songs but all in tagalog :D (edited)

There is no cap on the time period, it can be modern or traditional.

I think the space theme was explored in AhWham's Intergalatic Radio Collab. So what I was thinking of was Tankmen on a ship sailing the seven seas in search of new music and flying a flag that bears the Newgrounds logo.

There is no water in the desert.

I think you are overthinking it a bit there.
Avatar
Possibly the Tankmen with trekking poles and images of various locales around them?

Avatar
Should I make a blog post promoting this collab?
Avatar
Sure! Anything helps!
Avatar
I no longer have any ideas for this due to my lack of good sounds in my music programs for folk instruments
Avatar
any help with figuring out how to work around this would be appreciated
Avatar
Hmm, you could try jamming around in some exotic scales, or perhaps consider composing a folk track from the various countries from around the world.
Avatar
makes sense. I'm just not sure if I can render it well

I use east west Ra, Silk and Jade ethnic Orchestra by Strezov Samples
8:42 PM
The last is when I make Asian music
Avatar
ah, okay!
Avatar
These are huge samples libraries and can help you a lot to get inspiration.
Avatar
yeah i gotta also recommend EastWest for ethnic sounds, they're just hella price-y but theres some free kontakt and decentsampler libraries that have some ethnic stuff ! (edited)
Avatar
okay!
Avatar
https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-start/ NI has a new factory library thats free with the acoustic library that has a good amount of free ethnic instruments ! :D (just make sure you look around for the one that comes with the kontakt player version, it should come with it) edit: it was the komplete start (edited)
Step into music production with KOMPLETE START – a curated selection of studio-quality instruments, effects, utilities, loops, and samples for the low price of nothing at all. Play over 2,000 customizable sounds – drums and percussion, bass, acoustic instruments, synths, pads and atmospheres, effects, and more. And did we mention it’s free?

Or if all else fails make your own instruments. Go into a bamboo forest and harvest a root end to make into a Shakuhachi, grab some wooden block to use a clapsticks. If your woodworking skills aren't up to scratch consider simplifying it and going more primal in your approach.

so real for that 🥶
Avatar
I know I mentioned fiddle music, technically I have a string instrument I can access but I'm very bad at it lmao
Avatar
It would be entertaining to hear someone compose some Prehistoric Music, although idk what country you could claim it's from.
Avatar
...You could jokingly say Pangaea or something
8:53 PM
Also no joke, I was in a music camp a couple of years that had a fun "history of music" activity where you actually learned about the development of music (or at least western music) and got to come up with your own short pieces in the style. It started with prehistoric music lmao
Avatar
Sounds fun, perhaps someone could start a Primal music collab next that incorporates soundscapes into the mix.
Avatar
THAT COULD INDEED BE FUN
8:54 PM
I'm gonna write that down
8:56 PM
could also be called the "touch grass audio collab" lol

No DAWs allowed here!

That would make it tough. Unless the DAW is only used for recording and editing. No MIDI sounds, controllers, Synths, or virtual instruments only that which one can create and record themselves. (edited)

Yeah, that would make sense.

Hey guys what do you think about this? It's inspired on Nepal https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mdFaEgb0P6q9eHVvwsSXd1usiY5VRHTF/view?usp=drivesdk
I like it, it sounds quite cinematic at the start
Avatar
Is enough for the Collab or you want me to make something more energic?
Avatar
If you want to make something more energic then you can, otherwise it is a good track for the collab.
Avatar
Maximum 2 minutes?
Avatar
Avatar
vfuture
Maximum 2 minutes?
That's just a guide, If there is a lot of participants (which there rarely is) then it makes organizing all the songs easier if they are 2 minutes or less.
Avatar
Hear me out
11:39 PM
I'm going to make an Egyptian song
11:39 PM
2 minutes long aprox
11:40 PM
Maybe this Nepal song is too boring for them
Avatar
I liked the Nepal song tbh, but you are welcome to make more tracks if you desire.
Avatar
Y'know I think it'd be good to have some slow tracks in the album, since others might be doing more energetic ones
Avatar
Yes a balance of tracks would make for a more dynamic listening experience.
Avatar
Listen to this, it's an Egyptian style track. The Rythm is called malfuf, using Santoor and Duduk which are folkloric instruments.
Avatar
Well that was not what I was expecting
Avatar
And that's bad?
Avatar
Not exactly no
9:03 PM
It's very modern sounding
9:04 PM
I was expecting more of a traditional sound is all
Avatar
Malfuf is an Egyptian Rythm with darbuka and other Arab instruments, Santoor and Duduk are used in Egyptian music.
Avatar
I see
Avatar
So basically it's folkloric music with 2 synths, a bass and a kickdrum 😂
Avatar
It sounded like a fusion of modern electronic meets Egyptian Folkloric music
Avatar
Yes, something like that
Avatar
So which you prefer? The Nepal soundtrack or the Egyptian electronic song? (edited)
Avatar
Personally I prefer the Nepal track, but I was thinking of including them both
10:28 PM
The more tracks the better
Avatar
If anyone needs inspiration, My Singing Monsters of all things has a beautiful song in its soundtrack that incorporates several traditional instruments as monsters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JzcMHYQzkA Key: Floot Fly (the orange flappy one) - Pan flute Xyster (the blue snake one with the horns) - Guzheng Knucklehead (the tree with the hands) - Frame drum Larvaluss (purple one with the strings) - Koto G'Day (white one with the long snoot) - Didgeridoo Roarick (red one with the floating skull) - Sings in a style similar to joik, traditional singing style of the Sámi people of Scandinavia Carrilong (the red dragon with the bells) - I think it's a gamelan?
Avatar
I'm not sure if this sounds Bossa Nova enough.
Avatar
No, that doesn't sound like bossa Nova at all.
Avatar
Damn, I thought the chord progression was Bossa nova inspired but I improvised the lead
Avatar
Maybe the riff but the chords are not Brazilian enough
Avatar
I see, unless someone wants to use the riff and overlay it over their own chord progression.
6:20 AM
Well what genre does my track sound like anyway?
6:22 AM
Yes the riff is bossa Nova, Brazilians always use the same riff and that's great
Avatar
Avatar
vfuture
Bossa Nova is like jazz without the annoying dissonant notes, take a look: https://youtu.be/tZP1WNqbjmA?si=0K2ImOaE7wqwS4in
You mean the "spicy" notes
Avatar
But the way they handle the harmony is godlike
Avatar
Avatar
FlamadourNG
You mean the "spicy" notes
Yeah... spicy... 😬
Avatar
Like the most horrible and random, the more jazz 🤣
6:30 AM
As a musician with classical background (yes I hate Arnold Schoenberg) I agree
Avatar
...Still don't know what to do for this, I think I'm going to have to hold off on it
Avatar
I'm in the same boat, I could try again to compose a bossa nova piece making sure to pay attention to what chords are used.
Avatar
im 100% sure Im gonna make like italian canal music or wahtever, just gotta pop out the accordion which weighs 70lbs
Avatar
oh god that's a big accordion

Bolero is a genre originating from Eastern Cuba during the late 19th century as part of the trova tradition.

@Artist Would anyone be interested in creating a banner for this collab? Pinging again since the deadline is coming up.
Avatar
I could start on it after Halloween, I think I'll have enough time
👍 1
Avatar
oH sHIT wonder if my French-style electro swing I started could count for this collab? I got somewhat inspired by "Dragons" by Caravan Palace, which uses Romani folk music from the area as a basis, so if I incorporate enough of that influence I bet it could work for this prompt
Avatar
It could work, I'd like to hear it either way.
Avatar
More sections added, and now have a solo violin courtesy of Sibelius being able to do what GarageDon't.

So normally banners are 1248px by 624px, but it can be bigger if Flamadour wants it so (edited)

cool cool, thanks

Avatar
I'd say just stick to the regular dimensions of 1248px by 624px

Wip banner. Wondering if I should have both Tankmen carrying luggage or carrying those hitchhiker bundles.
Avatar
@FlamadourNG Do you have an opinion?
10:22 AM
also need an idea for one more landmark to use in the background
Avatar
@AhWham, you've been around to give me advice on this before, can you tell me how it's looking?
Avatar
Looking good so far! 👍
Avatar
yay!
1:54 PM
do you have an opinion on Tankmen with luggage vs Tankmen hitchhiking?
Avatar
Not really since they’re still stick figures atm. But I like the hitchhiker
Avatar
okay cool, I guess I'll follow that one and give the other a similar bag on a stick thing?
1:56 PM
I wanted to decide before I committed to the line work lol
Avatar
Ah I see, yeah make ‘em both hitchhikers
Avatar
cool cool
Avatar
Also unrelated but, I just realized your avatar has their hands to their sides. I always thought they were playing the accordion 😭
Avatar
NOW I CAN'T UNSEE THAT
2:01 PM
it's supposed to be a lil cowboy pose with the wide stance and hands on hips, like I'm gonna draw guns or something lol

As for another landmark what about the Leaning Tower of Pisa? that one is quite easily recogniseable. Otherwise perhaps a landmark from Asia, so that there is one from each continent.
